Postdoctoral Fellows: Molecular Bases of Infectious Disease and Cancer – University of Maryland SOM

Postdoctoral

Applicants are sought to fill multiple Postdoctoral Fellow positions to work on interdisciplinary projects in the molecular bases of infectious diseases and cancer in the laboratory of Dr. Eric J. Sundberg (www.sundberglab.org), Professor of Medicine and Co-Director of the Basic Science Division of the Institute of Human Virology (IHV; www.ihv.org) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM; www.medschool.umaryland.edu) in Baltimore, Maryland. IHV is a unique research institute that combines basic research, epidemiology and clinical research in a concerted effort to speed the discovery of diagnostics and therapeutics for a wide variety of chronic and deadly viral and immune disorders. UMSOM is America’s oldest public medical school and one of the largest of all US medical schools. Recent postdoctoral trainees in the Sundberg laboratory have taken positions in academia on the tenure-track, major pharmaceutical companies and federal research facilities.

Projects in the Sundberg laboratory focus on the structural, energetic and functional dissection of molecular mechanisms of infection, immunity and cancer, as well as the development of proteinbased therapeutics and small molecule antibiotics. We leverage our longstanding expertise in protein X-ray crystallography and growing expertise in cryo-electron microscopy to define molecular recognition events in order to rationalize our development of novel therapeutics. As Co-Director of the Structural Biology Shared Service of the NCI-designated Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Sundberg leads the X-ray crystallography core and the University of Maryland's multi-campus cryo-EM initiative in Baltimore.

Requirements for these positions include a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in biochemistry or related discipline. Demonstrated capabilities with structural biology, molecular biophysics and protein engineering techniques, as well as the ability to work in a vibrant, highly productive, intellectually stimulating and collaborative research group, are highly sought. Interested applicants for these positions should send: (1) a curriculum vitae; (2) a statement of research interests and experience, not to exceed two pages; and (3) the names and contact information of three references. All files should be sent as PDF files, electronically to: Ms. Kathryn Eclar at keclar@ihv.umaryland.edu with the subject line “IHV postdoctoral position”. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.
