Postdoctoral Opportunities at the University of Washington, Seattle

The University of Washington, Seattle invites applications for four postdoctoral scholar positions in two interdisciplinary projects in environmental science and engineering.  One project will involve the development of a novel biotechnology for water treatment, building on knowledge of natural microbial communities to construct synthetic assemblages of anaerobic and aerobic ammonia oxidizers for nitrogen removal.  We are seeking candidates in a) reactor technology/process engineering b) mathematical modelling of biological systems and c) microbial ecology/physiology.

The second project involves multi-omics studies of anaerobic food webs, combining field and laboratory analyses of organic matter transformation coupled to nitrate- and sulfate-respiring populations.  Here we are seeking candidates with experience in anaerobic microbiology, field research, and reactor technology, and also having a working familiarity with recent advances in genetic and metabolite analyses.

The positions come with a full package of health benefits, and the many cultural and natural amenities of the University and the greater Seattle area.

Candidates from Environmental Microbiology, Chemical, Environmental or Bioprocess Engineering are encouraged to apply.  Review of applications will begin immediately, and will continue until all positions are filled.  The positions are available as early as August 2017, for duration of one year, with opportunity for renewal depending on satisfactory progress and funding availability.  To apply, send an email to Dave Stahl ( and Mari Winkler ( with a one-page cover letter, a CV, a list of at three references, and copies of two relevant publications combined into one PDF file.
