Microbiome Studies, Kalan Lab

Applications are invited from ambitious, independent and motivated candidates to work in the area of host-microbiome interactions. This fully funded project is aimed at exploring the chemical diversity encoded within in the human microbiome and probing the biological function of metabolites produced by host-associated microbes on the skin.

The candidate will work with a highly interdisciplinary team comprising of molecular biologists, microbiologists, and chemists to identify microbial metabolites targeting host chemoreceptors and characterizing downstream signaling pathways. The candidate is expected to be capable of developing independent research projects and provide intellectual contributions and leadership to ongoing collaborations and mentoring to junior members of the laboratory. Our research is interdisciplinary. We are looking for candidates with relevant experience in cell biology and microbiology or related areas.

Additional desired qualifications:

o Experience with mammalian cell culture and/or skin biology

o Experience working with cell surface receptors and signal transduction o Experience with basic microbiological techniques

o Strong communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills o Experience in the integration of different data modalities including genomics and metabolomics.

This position will be held at McMaster University, recognized as one of Canada’s most research-intensive universities. Hamilton is 45 minutes from Toronto. It is also about an hour from Buffalo, NY, and less than an hour from Niagara Falls, and the nearby Niagara wine country. The Kalan lab will be transitioning to McMaster University in 2022.
