Evelo Biosciences is seeking an experienced and talented Microbiology Scientist to join our dynamic organization.

We are looking for a Scientist to join our Microbiology group to help drive key programs. The central opportunity and requirement in this role is to utilize creative approaches to elucidate gut-microbe interactions that can be translated to innovative medicines. This role will engage in collaborations with our internal immunology, fermentation, analytical teams, and external partners. The candidate must be independent, technically competent, able to efficiently work across multiple projects and solve challenging problems in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be innovative and use his/her creative and imaginative problem-solving skills to help bring new products to patients.

Primary responsibilities:

• Identify novel microorganisms, their components, and novel modalities for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases
• Design and execute experiments to characterize microbial physiological, molecular, immunomodulatory, and pharmacological features
• Provide microbiology expertise to cross-functional teams, to design and execute in vitro and in vivo research studies with immunology, oncology, and other disease areas
• Communicate experimental plans and data to multiple cross-functional scientific teams
• Author reports and regulatory filing sections

Desired capabilities and skills:

• Expertise and hands-on experience in host-microbe interactions, biochemistry, microbial physiology, and molecular biology
• The right candidate will enjoy working in the lab, explore the intersection between diverse biological fields, and develop novel approaches to answer challenging biological questions
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, in a team environment, and comfortable working with highly technical projects and personnel
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a passion for working in a fast-paced and evolving organization
• Persistence in pursuing objectives to completion with a focus on quality, speed and execution excellence
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Team-oriented with a strong work ethic

Education and experience requirements:

- PhD degree in microbiology or related field 

- Relevant experience in industry preferred
