Position Description:

Research assistant to support execution of biomedical research on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) - funded project to study the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis. The research assistant is also responsible for coordinating and conducting other activities related to the study that includes managing lab inventories, ordering supplies, preparing reagents, training students, and maintaining the equipment and laboratory.

Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with preference for a Master’s degree or equivalent degree or experience.
Skills to set up, organize, and oversee the operation and maintenance of the laboratory.
Knowledge and understanding of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, bacteriology, and microbiology.
Ability to handle Risk Group 2 organisms and hazardous chemicals safely.
Ability to operate laboratory equipment, including spectrophotometers, thermal cyclers, microscopes, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, ultracentrifuges, and liquid scintillation counters.
Ability to conduct biochemical, molecular biological, bacterial, and microbiological experiments under limited supervision.
Experience in rodent husbandry or veterinary care is useful, but not required.
Ability to work and communicate with PI and laboratory members effectively and collaboratively. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable and a self-starter.
Ability to use computer applications, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Required Communication and other Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work with minimal supervision in an organized fashion.
Capacity to work collaboratively with investigators in a multidisciplinary academic setting.
Experience in rodent husbandry or veterinary care is useful, but not required.
Must have excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office. Experience using advanced Excel functions such as tables, graphs, statistical formulas, and Basic editor is preferred.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in animal care and laboratory activities.
