Dr. Pope has been a pioneer in metagenomic approaches to understanding the physiology of microbial communities in the rumen and other ecosystems, such as bioreactors. He has especially focused on translating his findings from community samples to mechanistic knowledge through gene synthesis and other approaches. His lab is also interested in genome reconstruction from environmental sequencing samples, metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics.
