MALDI - Microbial Isolate Identification

MALDI Biotypers are used in research, by industry or in clinical applications to effectively identify purified microbial isolates at their genus, species or strain levels. Fresh cultures are spotted onto a target plate, and proteins upon ionization provide a unique spectral fingerprint.

Our Bruker MALDI Biotyper Sirius GP system runs samples on an extensive Bruker BDAL library with over 11000 strains. The user also has the option to generate their own library for specimen identification.

Please find a sample preparation guide in the downloads, which details how to submit cultured sample or prepared target plates to the Microbiome Core.

If you are an internal UMICH researcher looking to catalogue microbial strains, you can place a submission through our MiCores account, and external clients can make a submission through our Qualtrics intake form. You may also get in touch with the Microbiome Core, microbiomecore@umich.edu to learn more about this service.
