Event Description
BACTERIAL PATHOGENESIS JOURNAL CLUB 2016-2017
Chris Alteri lab, Sept. 23, 2016
Time: Every other Friday from 3-4 PM starting Sept. 23, 2016
Location: Novy Library (5613 Med Sci II)
Some guidelines about presentations:
- Presentations should be ~45 min.
- The paper to be presented must be emailed to Chris Alteri (alteri@umich.edu) as a PDF by Friday one week before the presentation. It is the responsibility of the lab PI to assign presenters for the journal club.
- Papers should represent a substantial contribution to the field. It is best not to assign more than 1 paper unless the contrast between 2 papers is meaningful or controversial. Instead, complementary figures from an additional paper can be included in the presentation.
- New feature of BPJC: In addition to the featured paper presenters are encouraged to spend 3-5 min presenting a Classic Spotlight from the Journal of Bacteriology. Here is one example: Classic Spotlight Schneewind Plague
- Suggested format:
- Classic Spotlight
- Introduction of the model system or topic
- Relevant information from the literature that will highlight the questions and experiments from the paper
- Rationale for the paper
- Figures from the paper (note: not all figures need be shown especially from a long paper; some can be summarized)
- Conclusions & future questions
- Refreshments are the responsibility of the presenting lab - no need to get too much – just a few snacks and drinks
- Room 5613 has a built-in projector, but each lab should provide a computer for their presentation. If you don’t wish to bring a computer with you, please reserve one from the Micro office or contact Chris Alteri prior to your JC.
Scheduling:
If for some reason your lab is unable to present in the assigned slot, please arrange a substitution with another lab and e-mail (alteri@umich.edu) about any scheduling changes.
