==================================================================================

The mission of the Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation is to support early stage investigators engaged in basic biomedical research that has the potential to significantly advance the understanding, diagnosis or treatment of disease.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be early-stage investigators in the first to fourth years of their tenure track faculty position.
  • Must hold M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees
  • Must NOT have current R01 funding.

Grant funds are designed to provide start-up support to move a project forward to the point where R01 or other independent funding can be obtained. It is not the intent to support projects that are already under way and are already receiving significant grant support to provide long-range funding beyond an initial three-year period of support. Applicants with current R01 funding should not apply. The Foundation will not fund overhead/indirect costs, salary is acceptable. Grants provide $75,000 per year for a period of up to three years and are contingent upon approval of a yearly progress report by the applicant. The grants are not renewable.

The University of Michigan may submit a maximum of ONE proposal.
Deadline for submission of an application to the Foundation is Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

For consideration as an institutional nominee, submit ONLY the items below electronically by Tuesday June 20, 2023, by 11:59 PM through Competition Space.

  • Nominating letter from the department chair, or division chief/section head.
  • Recent letters of support (LOS) (2 maximum) attesting to nominee's potential and quality and scope of their research. These letters are for internal review; if they were obtained for another recent award review or recent recruitment application, you may use these rather than requesting new letters.

  • Lay summary of project (1-2 pages). Please note that the Foundation's Board /Review Committee includes non-scientist members, making this summary particularly important
