Assistant Professor of Microbiology faculty position at University of Maine

The Department of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences invites applications for a 50% teaching-50% research, full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Microbiology. The successful applicant will contribute to teaching, advising, and providing research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates should be able to effectively teach undergraduate Microbiology lecture- and lab-based courses and develop a graduate course in their specialty. The successful candidate will develop and maintain an externally-funded research program. The specific research emphasis of this position is flexible and may include, but is not limited to, the use of genomic and proteomic approaches to study host-pathogen interactions, antimicrobial resistance, immune response to pathogens and vaccination, or microbial pathogenesis, quorum sensing and other factors in microbial population dynamics. The candidate may become affiliated with the UMaine Institute of Medicine and will have access to CORE facilities and a state-of-the art BSL-3 facility. The candidate may have the opportunity to benefit from the recent NIH Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) award focused on cell signal regulation in response to extracellular cues. Teaching assignments may change based on department needs and the candidate’s expertise. Qualifications">Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Microbiology or relevant field
  • Post-doctoral experience
  • Demonstrated ability to teach microbiology-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Strong record or promise of scholarship, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and extramural research funding
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to advise and mentor students
  • Commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the discipline and institution

Preferred:

  • Record or promise of high professional and institutional service and leadership capacity
  • Record of collaborative research to complement and expand existing research programs within the department
  • Additional teaching experience and/or mentoring of undergrads in research experiences
