Join us! We take an interdisciplinary approach to understand microbiomes, thus there are research opportunities in fields ranging from molecular biology and genomics to biogeochemistry and environmental science.

We are currently recruiting for multiple positions (postdoc and BS/MS level, part time or full-time) on two different projects involving the analysis and synthesis of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data from microbiomes.

  • One project is on integrating Great lakes omics and environmental data through development of a novel research database, in collaboration with the Cooperative Institute of Great Lakes Research and the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab. 
  • A second project is on the analysis of omics data from microbiomes of the human gut, in collaboration with Drs. Tom Schmidt, Pavan Reddy, et al.

 Positions are available immediately but later start dates will be considered. Review of applications will start April 29th and continue until the positions are filled. Primary responsibilities will include one or more of the following:

  • analysis of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data (assembly, binning, annotation)
  • quantitative/statistical analysis of ‘omics data in the context of environmental data
  • conceptual design of a research database for integrating data from ‘omics, the environment, and experiments from the lab and field
  • development and testing of the database including design of queries, outputs, and data visualization
  • design and implementation of a database user interface
  • data retrieval and curation
  • project coordination and interaction with collaborators

 Required qualifications:

  • BS in microbiology, bioinformatics, or related field
  • Experience with unix or programming (perl, python, java, or related languages)

 Desired qualifications

  • MS or PhD in microbiology, bioinformatics, or related field
  • Experience with database design and development and associated frameworks and languages (Django, SQL, neo4j, etc.)
  • Data visualization experience (R shiny, etc)
  • Biostatistics expertise
  • Working knowledge of R/R studio
  • Experience with analysis of metagenomic data from microbiomes
