The Dudley lab (http:/ /foodscience.psu.edu/directory/egd100) at The Pennsylvania State University has an NIH-funded postdoctoral position available to investigate the role of non-pathogenic E. coli in modulating Shiga toxin production by E. coli O157:H7. Previous (Infect.Im mun. 83:418; https://doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2018.01325) and unpublished studies have identified several mechanisms driving this process. By leveraging the >80,000 isolates cataloged in Penn State`s E. coli Reference Center (http://foodscience.psu.edu/research/centers/ecoli), the project goals are to mechanistically define known processes and to identify new ones. The Dudley lab is located in the Department of Food Science and is one of several labs there applying tools of molecular biology and genomics in food safety research. Penn State has excellent core facilities including genomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry, and metabolomics, and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences maintains a campus-wide culture of excellence in infectious disease research. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in an appropriate field. The candidate should have a Ph.D with a strong background in bacterial genetics and/or biochemistry, and experience with microbial infectious disease agents. Leadership skills and a willingness to leverage expertise in collaborative projects with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are expected. Penn State is located in central Pennsylvania within the Nittany Valley.
