Position Summary

A full-time postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Soboll Hussey’s laboratory within the Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation at MSU. This position requires a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in infectious disease. A veterinary degree or equivalent is desired but not a requirement. The research focus is on immunology, particularly resistance to infectious disease, vaccine development, and herpesvirus studies. Experience with BAC mutagenesis is desired. The individual will interact with clinical sciences researchers as well as with collaborators on this project both nationally and internationally and will receive mentoring in infectious respiratory disease and immunology. The successful applicant will work on epithelial cell culture models and study immune responses to FHV-1 viruses and deletion mutants in addition to canine respiratory viruses. The ability to work independently on challenging problems, good interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to work productively in a happy and highly motivated group is important.

Doctorate -Infectious Disease

Minimum Requirements

This position requires a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in infectious disease.

Experience in a majority of the following areas is required:

  1. Tissue culture techniques for mammalian cell culture including sterile technique, media preparation, maintenance of primary cell lines, lymphocyte isolation, and proliferation techniques, and cryopreservation of cells.
  2. Preparation of samples for flow cytometry, and cytometric assays.
  3. Molecular biological techniques including DNA/RNA isolation, real-time PCR, sequencing.
  4. Basic virological methods, specifically experience in working with herpesviruses and Bac mutagenesis.
  5. Standard immunological assays including ELISA, Western Blotting, Chemotaxis assays, and protein electrophoresis.
  6. Tissue collection and processing post-euthanasia.
  7. Histological analysis

Desired Qualifications

A veterinary degree or equivalent is desired but not a requirement.
